Growing up in Heidelberg in the 70s & 80s

You turn around once and realize that half a century has passed since your childhood and youth in Heidelberg. Everyone remembers the tram on Hauptstraße, Horten at Bismarckplatz, or the “Knoblauch” café on Sofienstraße. Summers meant going to the Thermalbad or “Tiergarten” pool, eating homemade sandwiches from Tupperware boxes. In 1978, John Travolta danced across the screen at the Schloss cinema – and soon we were dancing too, taught by Nuzinger in Endemannstraße. The 80s often brought the end of school, the beginning of an apprenticeship or university. And shoulder pads, huge sunglasses, perms for girls and boys, the first car, the first apartment... Suddenly, it’s all back again as if it were yesterday.

Palatinate – The Dishes of Our Childhood

Cookbook
Palatinate – The Dishes of Our Childhood

Recipes & stories

Enjoyment and pleasure are very important in the Palatinate, something that children learn from an early age. Grandma's “Kerscheplotzer,” ‘Hitzkuchen’ on an outing to the Odenwald, “Verheierte,” “Hoorische bloe Knepp,” or “Schnorrgiggl” bring back memories of childhood, and of course, asparagus from and around Schwetzingen in all its possible variations is a must.

Stories such as the one about a mother who had to prepare 120 steamed dumplings to feed her family of eight are also included. People from Heidelberg and Mannheim, Weinheim, Dossenheim, Schriesheim, Neckargemünd, Balzfeld, and many other places in the Palatinate region allowed our author Susanne Fiek to look at their cookbooks and provided the accompanying stories.

Heidelberg – Pictures That Tell Stories

Photo Book
Heidelberg – Pictures That Tell Stories

Looking at Heidelberg's transformation, it is worth taking a photographic look at the city's districts in addition to the world-famous castle ruins, the Old Bridge with its striking gate, and the dreamy alleys of the old town. Neuenheim, Handschuhsheim, Rohrbach, Wieblingen—all of these incorporated towns were mentioned in historical documents earlier than “Heydelberg” itself.

Bergheim, Kirchheim, Weststadt, and the climatic health resort of Ziegelhausen are just as much a part of the city as the newer districts of Pfaffengrund, Boxberg, and Emmertsgrund. The historical photos tell the story of Heidelberg—from changes in the cityscape to the everyday lives of its people.
